Drag-and-drop mockup generator with 5000+ device mockups for designers
How David acquired customers
Tools used to build Mockuuups Studio
David and Marek turned their frustration with low-quality mockups into a profitable, self-funded design tool with 5000+ mockups.
Mockuuups started out of frustration for the lack of quality mockups to showcase their work back in 2014.
One day David and Marek decided enough was enough. They grabbed a DSLR camera, headed to the park opposite the office, and snapped pictures of themselves holding phones to create their own scenes.
A few days later, they released four on Dribbble and the community loved them with over 10K responses. It was validation that designers everywhere shared their frustration.
Balancing their professional responsibilities, they immersed themselves in the spirit of indie hackers while crafting the Mockuuups Studio app. Engineered to streamline the task of integrating screenshots into mockups, the app provided a hassle-free alternative to Photoshop.
The exhilaration of attracting their first paying customers during the launch ignited their drive to persistently enhance and broaden their self-funded product.
In the early days, they had no marketing budget and needed to leverage something bigger. In 2019, Figma gave them the perfect platform to create a plugin to offer their customers mockups without leaving Figma. And things took off.
With enough momentum, David could quit his job in 2020 and dedicate himself to Mockuuups Studio full-time. Later, Marek also joined full-time.
Unlike most tech companies where the goal is to gain more "users" to keep greedy investors happy, Mockuuups is 100% self-funded. It's risky, but it means their only choice is to pay attention and provide customers the best possible mockup experience.
Today they're self-funded, profitable and just getting started. With no investors to steer the ship, they're focused on giving designers the world's best mockup experience.
Start by solving your own frustration - others likely share it
Side projects can become full-time businesses with patience
Platform plugins (Figma, Sketch) can be massive distribution channels
Self-funding gives you freedom to focus on customers, not investors
Community validation (like Dribbble) can validate demand before building
