Founder stories
Budgeting software that teaches people a new way of thinking about money with the "give every dollar a job" philosophy.
How Jesse acquired customers
Tools used to build YNAB
Jesse Mecham built a simple spreadsheet to manage money with his wife. That spreadsheet became YNAB, now used by millions worldwide.
In early 2003, Jesse Mecham was a broke college student, newly married to Julie, trying to stretch their tiny income to cover rent, groceries, and tuition.
They didn't just need to track money—they needed a way to make it work for them. So Jesse built a simple spreadsheet around one guiding principle: give every dollar a job.
That little system would become so much more than a budget. It became a gateway to building the life they truly wanted. "Giving every dollar a job" became the foundation of YNAB.
YNAB has been bootstrapped from day one—Jesse never took VC funding. The company grew through word-of-mouth, content marketing, and a devoted community of users who loved the methodology.
Today, YNAB's spendfulness practice has helped millions of people define their priorities, reduce stress, and start living with purpose. The team hears reports every day of lives being changed: debt paid off, marriages saved, opportunities seized, stress eliminated.
The YNAB team lives all over the world—from Boston to Brazil and Portland to Poland. Jesse also wrote "You Need A Budget," a book expanding on the YNAB methodology.
